Since graduating, Edward has started up a charity called IT Skills 4 Rural Kenya, which collects donated computers from the U.K. and ships them out to his and other rural villages in Kenya. Thanks to Edward and the work of his trustees, team and volunteers, his home village now has electricity and an IT centre each where villagers can use the donated computers and the internet to gain further knowledge, skills, contacts and education. Calendar 70 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0000 Stress relief in the workplace After introducing what stress is, we will briefly deal with the problem-focused approach that mainly concerns assertiveness skills. We will then move on to the emotion-focused side of things, and will look at how to deal with stress in four parts: understanding what is stressful for you personally; preventing yourself from taking on any more stress (becoming more stress-hardy); dealing with the backlog; and noticing (and heading off) what might send you back into a stressed state. A number of techniques will be introduced from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness meditation and related disciplines; participants will be able to practise some of these. Dheeresh Turnbull, who will be giving the workshop, is a former schoolteacher who qualified as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in 1997. He has been running groups for many years, and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programmes since 1999. He is now a senior Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Trainer with Aurora CBT. Recognising this and the fact that employers are increasingly looking for broader skills amongst all their staff, the beepurple team and the Careers Centre have worked together on creating ‘The Employability Skills Programme’. Running from 9 February – 9 March, the programme is a series of five workshops, designed to help students develop some of the skills they may need in the workplace such as presenting with confidence, demonstrating leadership qualities and the ability to communicate effectively. Details on each workshop can be found here and participants who attend all five workshops you will receive a certificate from the Careers Centre, which can be used to enhance your CV and any future job applications.
